Perfect Baby Names Update

Well ... January 25th! Wow! has this been a busy month. But you know how you sometimes are so busy and don't seem to get much further towards your goals? Well that seems to be what I've been doing so far this year.

I've been working on being fully engaged in my mind and body with the activity at hand. So ... I'm trying to focus on what I'm actually doing and enjoying it. I have a bad habit of letting life just pull me along and not really deciding to do something in particular. Or, I'm easily distracted from something I'm doing. Or, I'm always thinking about the past or the next thing or something else I should be doing and not enjoying the moment. Crazy.

Anway, I'm seeing some progress. I intend to work on this goal for the whole of 2005! It'll take that long to improve!

I'm working on an RSS feed news blog on my Perfect Baby Names site. I'm also working on getting a database of baby names together. I don't know how other people get so many friggin' names typed into a database, but it sure is a looooooonnnnggggg process. My hubby Dale is helping too.

American Indian Baby Names

I just had an interesting time reading and studying about North American Indian baby names. There's so much to learn!

Names from their "old" languages are different and full of meaning. A lot of those old names are coming back into popularity.

Native North American Indians changed their names throughout life -- at birth, puberty, and other events that were significant.

I've also uploaded a list of 69 Indian names and I hope people will contact me with more American Indian names and their meanings.

Perfect Baby Names website is growing too!

I'm actually having fun creating content. I think I've gotten past the blocks for writing. It's always been a talent and stress reliever (writing), but it's been hard to get going! Anyway ...

In December I studied about kanji characters and Japanese baby names. It's fascinating. There are over 4000 kanji "pictures" you have to know by memory in order to read Japanese newspapers. The thought came to me that you can't use phonetics to learn kanji. Hmmm -- I know phonetics is touted as "the best way" to learn to read, but what if your language is all in pictures!? -- like the Japanese kanji language?

Phonetic reading wasn't taught when I went to school. Yet, I learned to read very well and I know what each of the letters sounds like -- even though no-one taught me what the sounds are.

I taught my twins to read when they were between 2 and 4 years old. I used the "whole word reading method" and later added sounds. They were reading at a grade 7 level in grade 2. Both are adopted and are diagnosed FASD and ADHD. So ... that proves to me that kids can learn to read without phonetics. I wrote about family experiences on a page on my website.

Studying about kanji Japanese baby names has given me the motivation to learn kanji. It should be fun. I'd like to learn Spanish too.

There's a new page now about creating a baby name. There are as many techniques as you can make up -- anagrams, dropping letters, adding letters, combining words ... go find out how to create your own unique baby names!

I also finished two printable forms for you to use. One is a list of things to take to the hospital when having your baby and the other is baby name list to fill out with your favourite baby names. You can compare names, add and subtract names, until you find the Perfect Names for Your Perfect Baby!

My favourite name this month?? "Josiah" for a boy. Origin: Hebrew. Meaning: I've seen two meanings: Fire of the Lord and Jehovah supports.

2004 was a GROWING UP year!

It's good to be in 2005! I had a very eventful 2004. There were lots of challenges to deal with regarding other people and myself. There've been struggles and sickness and pain and death and birth and happiness -- but the biggest thing I'm grateful for is the growth experienced inside of me, and that I've made it to 2005!

As far as internet websites and marketing go, there is so much to learn in order to be successful. I've tried methods that I knew were too simple to take me to the pinnacle of success. I'm involved in the NitroIncubator program now and the motto is -- "Massive Action = Massive Success". It's a terrific program and will lead anyone to having a successful internet business if they're willing to add brains and motivation!

Part of my growth this year has come by learning the concept of actually "doing" something (action) instead of just "knowing" something. I sure don't have any problem learning stuff -- but the actual "doing" is hard sometimes. Sometimes I know about something, but I don't know how to do it. Other times, I know how to do it, but just am not motivated enough to do it. And lastly, I've got some definite blocks about doing some things.

So, I'm working out how to do things, and then discovering how to get myself to do them. It's a pretty enormous job, but I can do it!!

Well, I think I'll put the rest of today's entry into another post.

How do YOU choose baby names?

What will your child be like? Will they suit the name you give them? Will you change the name when you see them after birth?

We were just visiting one of our sons and his family -- 2 little granddaughters. It's made me think about how different we are from each other, right from the time we're born.

Yep, just looking at our two granddaughters you can see what I mean. Katie is a go getter and has been from the start! She didn't cuddle much, and when she did it was a short cuddle. She wanted to get going as fast as she could -- so she walked just before she turned 10 months old. She runs all day, plays hard, and has to soak up knowledge as fast as she can. She's 2 1/2 years old now -- and so much FUN! I love spending time with her.

Madison is 4 months old. She is so quiet and content. She's just starting to reach out to touch things. But you can feel that her whole attitude is, "I'm going to take time being a baby. There's no hurry ...".

My Mum says I was very content and laid back. My sister looked at her at birth and her expression said, "OK, I'm here. Now ... what're you going to do with me?". And both of us still have the same basic temperaments we were born with.

We didn't finalize our boys' names until we saw them. That may be a bit different for people who aren't adopting their children. I think you know what your child is like when you carry them for 9 months. But I also know some couples who wait until they see their child before finalizing the first name. They get a "feel" for who that little person is and name accordingly.

Irish Baby Names Sound Nice

I just finished an article about Irish baby names. Some of those names, like "Roison" pronounced 'RO-sheen' and "Niamh" pronounced 'Neev', are hard for us Irish-challenged folks to wrap our tongues around!

The top 20 Irish names for boys and girls are on that page, along with the pronunciation of the hardest ones. I wonder if I should do little audio recordings that start when visitors put the mouse over the name. Hmmm, sounds like fun! What do you think?

Anyway, Japanese baby names is the next page I'm putting up. Kanji is fascinating. Kanji are 'pictures' that depict objects. In Japan, only government-chosen kanji words can be given to babies. There are still a lot of perfectly good baby names to choose from, but a new approved list of kanji names was recently published and caused quite a stir among Japanese parents. They were happy to have more choice. Sometimes North Americans and some Europeans take our privileges, choices, and freedoms for granted.

The Japanese kanji name that's new on the list, and the one I remember best is "Strawberry" -- for a girl. Up until this fall, nobody has been able to call their baby girl "Strawberry". That name doesn't sound so crazy to me -- after all, Gwyneth Paltrow did name her baby "Apple" this summer.

Celebrity baby names are in the news a lot lately. Now Julia Roberts has twins -- Phinneaus and Hazel. I quite like both names -- at least they aren't like "Zowie Bowie" (who changed his name the first opportunity he had) or Fifi Trixibelle. Of course, that's just MY opinion because I'm sure there are lots of people who like those names and don't like Phinneaus. Whatever ...

I'm glad we can call our kids what we want to call them and not be regulated by government -- but I think we should show some responsibility for the welfare of our children, by giving them names they can live with for a long time.

Why Did I Make a Website? ...

I've been thinking for two days about the perfect baby names website and its purpose for others and for me. Why did I choose this topic and where will it lead me in helping others.

My Story

I'm a 53-year old grandmother of 3 girls. I'm the mother of 5 adopted children -- 3 boys and 2 girls. Also, I'm still the wife of my hubby (32 years).

I stayed home with my kids instead of working outside the home for most of their lives.

First, we adopted twin boys. That was in 1976 and they were 2 1/2 weeks old. Two beautiful babies, but hurt by their biological mother who used alcohol and drugs when she was pregnant. Two beautiful babies who caused awful disruption in our home and are still struggling to cope with life today. Tomorrow they'll be 28 years old.

Second, in 1979, we adopted another boy. He was 3 1/2 weeks old. Oh! How his mother must have wanted him to have a good life. She kept herself healthy and he was born healthy. He has been a delight to have all his life. He turns 26 years old in January.

We had our three boys for eight years and then, in 1985, along came a 7-year old girl who needed a home. She turned eight 2 weeks after we got her. She turns 28 in February. She was very unhappy and manipulative. We tried our best to help her gain a sense of belonging to our family. She always felt abandoned. She was taken away from her mother when she was 3, stayed in a foster home for a year, was adopted to another family for five years, and when the adoption broke down, she came to us. They left her at Social Services, telling her they'd be right back.

Two years later we adopted her older half sister. She was 11, almost 12 years old -- she just turned 30 years old. She'd been abused at her biological mother's home, abused by foster families, and she'd been adopted by the same family as her sister. There was no getting close to her. She wasn't going to love anyone again. She'd abandon us before that happened ... and she did.

All three boys are still around us often. One is married to a beautiful wife and has 2 girls (2, 3 months). The twins aren't married yet. One has a spouse he's been with for 3 years.

The two girls don't want to be in touch, and it's sad and it breaks my heart, but it's just better if we leave it that way.

So, back to the baby names site. I chose the topic because so many people on the internet are looking for baby names. I love babies and I know about baby names -- names are necessary!

I also know what is necessary for babies and kids -- what parents should teach them, how to encourage them, how to live with disabilities. I have lots of experience with ADHD, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and depression.

I also know what's nice for babies. All these cool things that are available for babies now are marvelous.

I know what it feels like to adopt your children. I know about specific problems in raising adopted children.

I know what it's like to lose health because of the stresses in life ... and then survive and thrive.

So, Perfect Baby Names is only the beginning. There are so many people I can help through websites on the internet. I'm grateful I live in an age where I can help people around the globe.
